Cutting Off
"Go ahead and step away from the chatter that surrounds you so that you can hear the truths within you and give them room to grow."
Dear Elloise,
This week, we cut off our satellite TV service. The day came and went without any hoopla because we really don’t watch much TV anyway. We have a few streaming services and our TV’s are capable so if we choose to sit in front of it and watch something, at least it will be exactly what we want to watch. I am not bothered in the least.
I know at some point, there will be something happening in our world that I want to check coverage for - and at that point, I may miss the convenience of it but right now, I have zero desire to consume anything put out by our mainstream media.
The Hot Hub and I have frequently had to remind our friends and colleagues that we don’t watch news. They never seem to accept that and always seem to try to “fill us in on all the things we miss” because we are weird and don’t watch TV. Sometimes, that is utterly annoying.
When the Hot Hub called to get our service shut off, he wasn’t even questioned. They asked why we were disconnecting, and he told them that we were not consuming tech anymore. There was no pause. No weirdness. Making me believe that we aren’t the first to make this call.
More time for books…and writing. Kind of looking forward to both of those things.
Now, my struggle seems to be whether or not I can completely cut myself off from social media. I have major FOMO, Elloise. Major.
I did decide that Twitter is no longer my cup of tea. I set up a new profile. Refollowed a few and for a few days, I gave it a good attempt. Every time I open the app, it’s a pile of drama and I am just no longer here for it. Does this make me old?
Instagram…I LOVE Instagram. Photos of fun and happy things. Beautiful places. Quick blurbs. I have been there a lot more than I have been on Facebook. I don’t put effort in to Facebook anymore. I don’t hate that platform. I just hate putting my personal things out into cyberland like I used to. So…it’s the ‘Gram and Substack for me….with the occasional eyes on my favorite weather people over on Facebook.
The world is changing, Elloise.
Is it odd that I don’t really recall my life without tech? I had pagers, the big blocky cell phones that were sold with a carrying bag. A dang Tandy computer. Whew. I was the shit back in my day.
I feel like this stack now ages me in a big way, Elloise. I am not happy.
Love,
S
